Functional Materials: Understanding the Chemistry and Physics of Solids
About this lesson

In this lecture we examine an electron counting scheme used to understand bonding in extended ionic-covalent solids. Generalized 8-N rule or generalized octet rule can be used to predict the presence of cation lone pairs, cation-cation bonding or anion-anion bonding as found in Zintl phases. This lecture was designed and delivered by Patrick Woodward for use in the course Solid State Chemistry (Chem 7330) at Ohio State University.
