Unlike metals the conductivity of semiconductors is dominated by factors that influence the carrier concentration, particularly the concentration of aliovalent dopants. In this lecture we examine how the conductivity of semiconductors depends on the band gap, temperature and dopant concentration. We finish with an overview of pn-junctions and MOSFET transistors. This lecture was designed and delivered by Patrick Woodward for use in the course Solid State Chemistry (Chem 7330) at Ohio State University.
