In both ionic and polar-covalent compounds the strength of the interaction between two atoms can be represented by a bond valence. In this lecture we examine the basics of the bond valence method and show how this idea can be used to quantify bonding and predict the lengths of bonds in such compounds. This lecture was designed and delivered by Patrick Woodward for use in the course Solid State Chemistry (Chem 7330) at Ohio State University.
