This is the first of several lectures dedicated to understanding the electronic band structures of extended solids in chemical terms. We begin with the simplest possible example, a one-dimensional chain of hydrogen atoms and show how crystal orbitals can be defined as linear combinations of atomic orbitals. This lecture was designed and delivered by Patrick Woodward for use in the course Solid State Chemistry (Chem 7330) at Ohio State University.
